My Top Target Finds

With our move-in date getting closer, I’ve been getting more and more excited to furnish our new apartment. And, if you know me at all, you know my number one, go-to-spot for all things home decor is Target (HomeGoods is a close second – if only they had online ordering!). So, in the spirit of sharing, I’ve decided to put together a post with my favorite Target finds that I’ve come across over the past few weeks.

The look we are going for combines industrial, modern-rustic, and Scandinavian design – I’m honestly not sure if there is an all-encompassing name for that, but basically we’re all about clean lines, neutral colors, and simple patterns.

Hope you enjoy these products, and happy shopping!

Saturdays are for the Tourists

Or, rather, Saturdays are for *the residents pretending to be tourists.

Matt and I played tourist today at the Hoboken Waterfront – which has always been one of our favorite places to relax on the weekend. With the coming of (slightly) warmer weather, we headed to there today to take advantage of the sunshine and fresh air (both of us are slightly sick, so we felt it would be good for not only our minds but also for our nasal passages).

I made Matt model for me, and – although he thinks he looks “scruffy” – ended up getting some cool shots of him. Thanks for unleashing your inner Zoolander for me, boo!

Go Home, Spring, You’re Drunk

It’s officially spring!

And just when we thought we were free of icy sidewalks and bitter winds, we have been hit by our fourth nor’easter in the past month! Granted, it ended up not being quite as bad as we expected, but to play it safe both Matt and I stayed home from work to ride out the storm.

About halfway through the day, though, we both began to go a little stir-crazy being stuck in my 500 square foot apartment. So, we made the perfectly sane decision to brave the elements and take a walk to the water. Although the wind was pretty crazy and we were (I was) slipping and sliding like crazy on the walk over, it ended up being a fun mini-adventure and helped to ease our cabin fever.

My Living Room

I humbly present to you – my little living room! Now, I must admit that this post will likely be relatively short (perks of living in a 500 square foot apartment – there isn’t a ton to show off).

I did an apartment tour on my Instagram story the other day and people actually really seemed to like it (based on some of the kind DMs I received… I’m sure some people fully skipped and/or clicked through the entire thing as well). So to keep the people happy, here you have it – my living room.

So, apologies for a rather lackluster post but I’d figure I’d go ahead and share with you what I had available now. A lot of the stuff in my living room I admittedly got from thrift shops or neighbors, so those things wouldn’t be anything exciting to showcase. But hopefully my next living room (as I am moving in approximately two and a half months!) will make for a better tour – as soon as we get it fully furnished, that is!

If you have any questions about any of the items I didn’t cover in this tour, feel free to drop me an email.

My Favorite Places: Sunnyside Cafe, Hoboken

Recently, Matt and I have been trying to branch out from our typical weekend routine of hibernating inside on the couch binging Netflix and Hulu all day. Don’t get me wrong, that is still probably one of my favorite ways to spend time, but with the spring drawing nearer I think we are both getting sick of wasting away inside.

So, this past weekend we decided to spread our wings and fly – staying within the approximately square-mile radius that is the city of Hoboken. Now, if there’s one thing you should know about Hoboken, it’s that there are the most bars and restaurants per square mile than anywhere else in the country. (Okay, in fairness I have never seen an official report supporting this claim, but most people seem to agree that it’s true.) In any case, there are a ton of new places to try.

Having lived in Hoboken for close to three years now, I have made my rounds in terms of its bar and restaurant scene. But, as a millennial constantly on the quest for the next trendy place, I am always willing to explore and try something new.

On this particular day, Matt and I decided to check out Sunnyside Cafe & Eatery – a self-proclaimed “exciting new all day café, serving brunch, specialty coffee, and drinks.” Would it live up to the hype? We were unsure, but I had seen that it had a pretty dope wall of plants inside when walking by on my way home from work, so that seemed to be a good indication of the level of trendiness it would exude.

And, for the record, it certainly did not disappoint. At the risk of sounding incredibly basic, this place was a #VIBE. The whole cafe has a really cool, industrial feel, with huge exposed beams and natural wood everywhere.

And the GREENERY! Plants on plants on plants, my favorite. Not to mention the LITERAL WALL OF PLANTS. Granted, I am sure most (all) of these plants are artificial, but who am I to judge? I don’t discriminate – and I sure as hell don’t have a green thumb myself. (Aside from the plant that I have on my desk at work that officially turned one year old this week! Unsure how he is still alive especially considering I either drown him or starve him… there is no in between.)

Anywho, back to Sunnyside. Long story short, the place has an awesome ambiance. It’s quiet, small, laid-back, but with a really fun and current vibe. Within 0.01 seconds of walking in, I felt nowhere near cool enough to be in existence. But lucky for me they were still happy to take my money (or, rather, Matt’s money… thanks again, boo!) and we placed our order and awaited the arrival of our second breakfast.

Now unfortunately for you, we devoured our meals too quickly to document – which is unusual for me considering I am the queen of taking at least 15 photos of my food prior to eating it. But – for the record – it was delicious.

I got the appropriately name “Brekkie Roll Sandwich” which consisted of scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, chives, cucumbers, and garlic-herb aioli on a roll. Matt got the Turkey Sausage Sandwich which I believe was exactly the same as mine plus (you guessed it!) turkey sausage.

So, despite the fact that I only have about two and a half months left of living in Hoboken, I will definitely be going back to Sunnyside – if not for the yummy, fairly-priced food then DEFINITELY for the trendy, cooler-than-me ambiance. And #vibe.

For a more in-depth review of Sunnyside and its menu, check out this article about the cafe on HobokenGirl.com.

My (Updated) Bedroom

Since it’s been almost exactly a year since my last interior post, I figured it’s time for a reboot – AND time to continue with the rest of my apartment! As you may already know, I will be moving out of my current apartment in a few months, so I definitely want to document the little home I’ve built here before I go.

Although there really hasn’t been a ton of change to my bedroom since my last post, I have rearranged a bit and wanted to share its current state with you. Well, current state sounds kind of bad and messy – it’s really quite the opposite, I promise.

So without further adieu, I present to you, my room!

Bed & Bedding

One thing that actually has changed in the past year is my bedding. I currently sleep with fully plain bedding – plain white pillow cases, plain white duvet insert (minus the duvet cover). In all honesty, I originally bought a new, really cute duvet cover from Bed, Bath, & Beyond but it ended up getting all wonky throughout the night and not staying aligned with the duvet insert.

So, low and behold, one day I took it off and (after experiencing one of the comfiest sleeps of my life) left it off. I do feel like duvet covers are kind of overrated – my comforter is comfortable, and isn’t that the most important thing? (Just kidding, we all sacrifice pain for beauty at some points, but you should never have to do that when it comes to your cozy sanctuary of a bed.)

Long story short, my bed is about as basic as it could be. I got my frame and mattress from 1-800-Mattress, and I don’t have any decorative pillows anymore. I would like to spice it up a bit when I move (add a headboard, visible bed frame, some less bland pillows, etc.) but this works for me for now.

Covered in my previous Get the Look post was my nightstand. I got this at Target (where, as you will see, I get most of my home decor). As luck would have it, the pieces on my nightstand are actually exactly the same as when I last posted a year ago (geeze, guess I should be switching things up more, huh?).

Dresser

Another area of my room that has not changed much in a year! I definitely want to revamp and declutter this space in my new apartment, but for now I can’t bring myself to change it. The dresser itself was from Value City Furniture – this store was my go-to when I was buying furniture for my first apartment, mostly because they would deliver up stairs (and I lived on a fifth-floor walkup). But, it has certainly served me well across the past few years.

The mirror is also something that I’m afraid I will be saying goodbye to in the move. I made this mirror when I moved into my first apartment after college (I was super into DIY’ing everything – can you tell?). I found the mirror at a thrift shop for $7.00 and bought the crushed shells from Michael’s. Hot-glueing the shells to the frame was no easy task, but I was so proud of the outcome. Now, after staring at it for about three years, I’m definitely ready for a change, but can still appreciate how I was able to turn something old and dingy into something cool and exciting.

The other knick-knacks on my dresser are just things I’ve come across and thought would look interesting and eclectic together. As my style has changed, these items have become less relevant to me, but looking back at them I’m reminded of a new and exciting time in my life when I was first moving out on my own and creating my first home.

Clothing Rack

One of the most useful pieces in my room is, without a doubt, my clothing rack. Given the fact that my whole apartment has one (yes, one) closet, I understandably run out of room pretty quickly.

So, to keep myself organized (and make getting dressed in the morning a whole lot easier) I bought this clothing rack. It holds a decent amount of weight and also has a space for shoes at the bottom. If you’re tight on closet space, I highly recommend getting one of these bad boys to help in the storage department.

Shelf Floor Lamp

One of my newer additions is also one of my favorite additions – part lamp, part shelves! I had been looking for a lamp for the far corner of my room that would also be able to stand next to my clothing rack, and this one was a perfect fit. It took about 20 minutes to assemble, but was totally worth it. It gives me more storage for my books and other items, and also lights up the space really well. Definitely recommend this piece as it’s super functional and looks great too.

Wall Decor

One thing that I think really helps a house (or apartment) feel like a home is wall decor. Now, of course, adding things to your walls always gets tricky in a rental situation, but to me it just feels worth it to make your room your own. Check out a few of the special pieces I have hung up in my room.

And, not to play favorites (definitely playing favorites) but both the world map and the “I Love Us” sign have a special place in my heart, as they were both given to me by a very special guy on our past two Valentine’s Days.

So that pretty much covers it! My room is one of my favorite places in the world and for that reason, I always want it to feel like home to me. Like I said, I’m sure a lot about my room will change when I move to my new apartment (and when I’m sharing it with – gasp – a boy!) but I’m excited to get the chance to create somewhere new for Matt and I to share.
